Urban Landfill Site Selection Using AHP and TOPSIS in GIS Environment (Case Study: Landfill of Kherameh Township)

Abstract:

Population growth and urban area sprawl, especially in the recent years has caused excessive consumption and then production of solid waste. Landfill and dispose of waste, one of the main concerns in the management of the urban environment. One of the important problems of urban managers in the country, is finding appropriate places landfill, in addition to compliance with the popularity, landfills have the least environmental impact. Selecting numerous factors and multiple data layers, causing the decision makers subconsciously led to the use of the system, which in addition to the Precision high, in terms of act quickly and easily operations are also at the higher level. Combines the capabilities of geographic information systems (GIS), and multi criteria decisin making (MCDM) tool that is suitable to be used for this purpose. Kharameh city in Fars province is one of the cities that is still not equipped organized system for urban waste. The main objective of this study is to apply spatial analysis operations, using AHP and TOPSIS model in GIS environment to the optimum site selection for urban landfills. For this purpose, all the environmental information (natural and human data on the number of 14 layers) of the Kharameh County entered into the GIS software and databases prepared for urban solid waste landfill. In the second stage, the digital layers based on existing standards, were weighed and classified. In the next step to finding suitable locations landfill, multi-criteria decision analysis algorithm and (AHP) were imposed on the existing layer. The results of AHP showed that residential area in the city Kharameh and depth of groundwater factors as the most important parameters are effective in locating landfills in the city. The final results of the AHP model has resulted in the identification of four zones, very suitable, suitable, unsuitable, very unsuitable were as landfill in the Kharameh County. Very suitable zone, with an area of over 20 hectares was prioritized using TOPSIS model, Region No. 1 was identified as a top priority urban landfill.
